UWB Overtakes WiFi

According to the most recent report from market researcher In-Stat "UWB sales will overtake WiFi volume in the near future." That's some pretty heady news considering that the firm has already publicly stated that 280 million WiFi chip sets will be sold this year alone.

Instat_logo So exactly how much and when?  Good questions.  For the answers, you'll have to purchase the report authored by In-Stat's Qasim Inam.

We're not the only ones to pick up on this news.  WirelessWeek, among others, covered the story last week.

The EU and UWB

Eu_flagLast week, the European Union took another welcome step to enable the widespread adoption of ultra wideband -- in a range of applications -- beginning later this year.

The Commission of the European Communities issued a decision to approve frequencies for use of UWB devices and stated that it "must be applied within the next six months throughout the EU's 27 Member States." That's good news for all of us in the UWB community and ultimately for consumers throughout Europe.

One other key point made by the Commission included the clear identification of video distribution as an important application area for UWB. "Furthermore, video signals will be transmitted using predominantly high-efficiency coding," said the decision. This essentially mandates the use of compression and validates Tzero's Wireless for HDMI product.

Ultra Wideband at CEATEC

Ceatec_logo This week, Tzero demonstrated wireless video at the CEATEC tradeshow in Japan. The event is the largest international exhibition in Asia featuring imaging, information and communications products and Tzero participated with Japanese distributor Kaga Electronics Co, Ltd. Together, the two companies showcased the power of ultra wideband and its ability to take DVD-quality video from source to display flawlessly.  Omrom also announced their new UWB antenna and received excellent coverage in publications like EE Times.

In addition, the show hosted a seminar on ultra wideband and wireless HDMI that was attended by nearly 100 individuals hungry for information on this new technology. The reaction from customers and partners at the event further demonstrate that the market is ready for ultra wideband, especially in a place like Japan where it can be extremely difficult to run new cabling.
